About

We started in 2014 with four reporters and one rule: go there. This is how the newsroom works, who is in it and what we will not do.

The story

  1. 2014

    A newsletter with eleven readers

Dateline starts as a Friday email about one street in east London: who owns it, who cleans it, who is being priced out of it.

  2. 2016

    The first reporter

Readers pay for a second salary. The email becomes a website and the street becomes a city.

  3. 2019

    The morning edition

Five stories at 06:30, every weekday. No push alerts, no autoplay, no comment section.

  4. 2022

    Bureaus

Reporters in Lagos, Mumbai, São Paulo and Berlin, each covering one city the way London is covered.

  5. 2025

    The podcast

One story a week, told by the reporter who was there. Half an hour, no panel.

How we work

  1. Be thereA story is reported from the place it happens. If nobody went, it does not run.
  2. Name the sourceNo anonymous quotes in the opinion pages, and as few as possible in the news pages. When a name is withheld, the story says why.
  3. Correct it in publicEvery correction is dated, explained and linked from the story it changes.
  4. Readers pay, nobody elseNo advertiser sees a story before you do, and none can buy one.
