The long read: The avenue that votes on its own street lights

A long avenue lit orange between apartment blocks, seen from abovePolitics
  1. 01 / 04

    The ballot

Forty blocks, eleven thousand residents and one question on the paper: how bright should the avenue be after midnight? The council expected a few hundred votes. It got six thousand.

  2. 02 / 04

    The meeting

Four nights of hearings, standing room only. Shift workers wanted light. Parents wanted dark. A man from block nine brought a lux meter and nobody laughed.

  3. 03 / 04

    The night walk

We walked all forty blocks at one in the morning with the engineer who has to build whatever wins. She stopped at every lamp and told us what it cost.

  4. 04 / 04

    The count

The result came in at 02:10. The avenue will dim to forty per cent at midnight, and every block can vote again in a year.
